sell more this festive season

The festive season is fast approaching, which means it’s time to dust off the Christmas lights, crack open the eggnog, and get those digital ducks in a row to ensure your online store is ready for both Christmas and Boxing Day.

We have put together a handy checklist to help you get the most out of your Christmas and Boxing Day trading, covering off all the basics along with a few handy tips for nailing three new ecommerce trends.

The basics

The holiday period can make or break your year; it’s important to maximise your chances of success by delivering a positive online customer experience. That starts with getting the basics right.

1. Work out your shipping and delivery rates and deadlines

Set your shipping rates and delivery cut-off times early and make sure these are prominently displayed on your website (site header, subscription pop-up box, checkout page, etc).

Top tip: Offer a shipping promotion; e.g. ‘free shipping on all orders this week’, ‘free shipping on orders over X amount’. This will encourage shoppers to get in early and allow you to control your shipping rush.

2. Organise your products and collections

You know your product range and what your customers want, so ensure the structure on your site makes the user journey and experience pleasant. Try the following:

  • Bestsellers on the homepage
  • Search function on the homepage
  • Professional, striking product photography
  • Update your inventory levels to avoid customer disappointment

Top tip: Create some dedicated Christmas collections on your store and make them really prominent for the best season.  Christmas Best Sellers, Christmas Gifts for Him and Christmas Gifts for Her are a good start!

3. Sprinkle some Christmas spirit

Online shopping is often perceived as less personal and lacking in experience (especially during Christmas), but it doesn’t have to be. Share the love with your customers by using the following tactics:

  • Free Christmas gift wrapping
  • Update your order confirmation messages to include a Christmas message
  • Have a gift with purchase or special offer
  • Add a touch of Christmas colours to your site’s theme- it can be as simple as adding a Santa hat to your logo.

Top tip: Keep a list of all the things you have updated with Christmas branding or messaging, so that it’s easy for you to remove after the festive season.

4. Send the right message

Get your promotional offers and marketing schedule set well in advance, and start communicating with your customers.

  • Update your website with the relevant information.
  • Make sure your Adword campaigns, Google Shopping or social media ads and communication all reflect your key Christmas messages.
  • Ensure your messaging changes from saying Christmas to Boxing Day.
